Background of the thesis


English is very important for us because in this globalization era we need to communicate with other relation in around the world English. There are four skills in learning English; speaking, writing, listening and reading. The one crucial skill in learning English is speaking. Many language learners regard speaking skill as the measure of knowing a language. People say that the success of learning foreign language is through their speaking skill of that language learning. It is because the goal of learning a foreign language is to be able to speak the language without any difficulty. Through speaking, someone can express what he or she feels sees and wants. Someone is said to be good at English if he can speak English fluently. If we want speak English fluently we have to practice and practice. 
The common problem faced in teaching speaking is dealing with a passive class, where students are unresponsive and avoid interaction with the teacher. In the teaching learning process, when the teacher asked the students about the lesson, most of them in the class can not answer a teacher’s question, even their understanding the question and know the answer. In fact, the students are really shy and afraid to make mistake when speak English in front of the class. They feel unconfident to speak English, lowest participation in every speaking activity. This condition becomes a great problem for teacher how to make their students can speak English in speaking lesson. We know speaking is language skill that absolutely possessed by every normal being.
      The methods of teaching speaking do not achieve the target for they focused on language forms instead of language function. What the teacher teaches is how to make the students complete all questions in the final semester test. He or she teaches about language instead of teaching how to use it in communication. In this case, speaking competence is ignored. Besides, the teacher teaches speaking using methods which are not suitable for teaching speaking. For example, the teacher asks the students to memorize sentences of stories, which do not reflect the learner’s thought. One of the phenomena related to some reasons why the English speaking teaching learning process cannot be conducted well is that the teacher has no skill of speaking English even she/he never uses English interaction and two-way communication is still lacking. Most students are passive and they are shy to ask for arguing on the teacher’s explanation or statement. In other words, students do not have opportunities to practice speaking English in a communicative way and they become bored with the monotony of classroom activity. 
      So, the writer find an effective method to teaching by movie. The writer thinks that this method can stimulate the students in class. Therefore, the writer chooses the title of this thesis "Retelling Story Method to improve of speaking skill by Wactch a Movie.
